FULTON – The Fulton Memorial Day Salute Committee has announced they will be holding a Watch Fire during this year’s Memorial Day Salute.  The fire will take place on Saturday, May 24, from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Recreation Park in Fulton.

The Watch Fire is a ceremony in which retired and unserviceable U.S. flags are burned in a large wood pile in honor of U.S. soldiers and veterans.  It is considered the proper way to dispose of a flag.

The community is invited and encouraged to attend this very solemn event.  Flag collection boxes are located in the lobby at Fulton City Hall, the Fulton Polish Home, Tavern on the Lock Restaurant, and the Fulton VFW.

The Fulton Memorial Day Salute is organized by Fulton’s four service clubs, the Kiwanis, Lions, Noon Rotary and Sunrise Rotary Clubs.  The theme for this year’s event is “Remember the Fallen, Celebrate Freedom”.  In addition to the watch fire, the salute will feature the traditional Saturday morning parade, rides, entertainment, food, school poster contest, 5k run, dunk booth and fireworks.
