Aircraft Crashes In Volney; Two Injured

An aircraft crashed off County Route 9 in Volney Saturday afternoon. State Police report two elderly men are seriously hurt.

According to police, Fred Bullard, Jr., 78, of 2348 Co. Rt. 8, Fulton, was flying his 1971 Rallye Minerva single engine plant. He was taking part in an exercise called a “bomb drop” at the Oswego County Airport. That’s a game in which teams of flyers drop bags of flour from their aircraft, trying to hit a target on the ground.

In the passenger seat was Rowland J. Pomerleau, 80, of 67 Summerhill Dr., Central Square.

Police say Bullard’s engine began to sputter, about 400 feet off the ground. Bullard tried to land the plane in an area about 300 yards north of Co. Rt. 9 in Volney. The plane clipped the tops of several trees and hit the ground nose first, spinning a half turn and stopping, upright.

The men were taken to University Hospital in Syracuse. Their conditions are not known but police said they suffered serious injuries.
