OSWEGO, NY – The New York State Canal Corporation, in conjunction with Parks & Trails New York, the Canalway Trails Association New York, and Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, is organizing the fifth annual Canalway Trail Celebration on National Trails Day, June 7.

In keeping with this year’s National Trails Day theme, “Join Us on the Trail,” nearly 40 local events ranging from family bike rides and boat tours to interpretive history walks, arts and crafts festivals and a “planting party,” will draw thousands of trail and canal enthusiasts to communities across the state.

These special events will highlight the growing prominence of the Erie Canalway Corridor as a worldclass recreationway and tourist destination for visitors and residents.

With more than 260 miles of developed trail, the Canalway Trail is fast becoming one of the nation’s premier cycling and multi-use trail destinations.

National Trails Day is America’s largest annual single-day trails and outdoor celebration, held each year since 1993 on the first Saturday in June, with more than 1,000 trail events nationwide.

In keeping with the goals of National Trails Day, the fifth annual Canalway Trail Celebration is designed to increase the awareness of the Canalway Trail, thank the many volunteers who provide support for the trail throughout the year, and introduce everyone to the many enjoyments and benefits of the Canalway Trail.

The New York State Canalway Trail System is comprised of a network of approximately 260 miles of multi-use, recreational trail that follows both active and historic sections of the Erie, Champlain, Cayuga-Seneca, and Oswego Canals across upstate New York.

When fully complete, the Canalway Trail will span more than 500 miles and connect numerous towns and villages, making it one of the
longest multi-use recreational trails in the country.
