Fulton lawmakers paused this week to honor retired Oswego County Legislator Clayton Brewer of Fulton.
Brewer stepped down at the end of 2009, completing a 30 year career in public service.
“Clayton is truly a people person, giving equal care and attention to everyone,” said former Fulton Common Council member Bob Weston, speaking on behalf of the council.
Weston noted Brewer’s 50 years of operating a full-service gas station and auto repair shop, his work to establish the county landfill, and his drive to create a racetrack at the county airport for quarter midget racers, which now bears the honorary nickname “Claytona”.
Alderman Jay Foster noted that Brewer did less visible things as well. “He helped me set my feet on the right paths,” Foster said, adding that he was a “rough kid”.
“Not many people could do it as well as you did,” Weston told Brewer, as Council members approved a resolution honoring Brewer and gathered for a picture with him and his family.
The Council also:
- Reappointed Robert Vayner to the Fulton Public Library Board of Directors;
- Approved a renewal of the city’s contract with the state courts system to provide security for Fulton City Court, located in City Hall;
- Noted that they would meet at 6:00 p.m., Feb. 16 with the city’s County Legislators;
- Heard Council member Peter Franco praise city police officer Chris Dempsey for his actions at the scene of an accident.
One liner of the night: As the Council discussed the upcoming snowmobile show and race on Lake Neatahwanta, one member asked whether the ice on the lake would be thick enough to be safe for the races after the recent warm spell. Mayor Ron Woodward said the organizers would make sure it was safe: “One of the organizers is gonna go out on the ice. If he comes back, it’s okay.”
