County Required To Pay Interest Money Back on Grant Funding

OSWEGO COUNTY, NY – Oswego County is going to have to cut a check to the state to return interest that accrued on grant funding for the county’s wireless communications project.

Michael Allen, director of E-911, explained the budget modification request earlier this week to the county’s Public Safety and Emergency Services Committee.

Allen explained that the second round of grant funding that the county received for the wireless project “sat in the bank too long.”

“The state is asking us to repay the interest to them,” Allen said.

The interest payment amounted to $6,878. Allen said that the money will be taken from his budget line for repair and maintenance.

Legislator James Oldenburg, R-Scriba, asked Allen if the county could request a waiver on the interest penalty.

Allen explained that the county made that request for the same situation for the first round of grant funding for the project.

“It was denied,” he said.

Legislator Morris Sorbello, R-Granby, pointed out that the county Industrial Development Agency has faced the same situation and been required to refund interest money to the state.

“In other words, spend the money faster,” said legislator Barbara Brown, R-Palermo.

Allen pointed out that the account has since been closed out. In all, he said that the county received $1.2 million in grant funding for the wireless project. missing or outdated ad config
