A day after Doug Hoffman came to Fulton, fellow Republican Congressional hopeful Matt Doheny did the same.
Doheny held a photo opportunity with about a dozen local Republican party officials at the party’s get-out-the-vote headquarters in the former Fulton Builders Supply building on Oneida St.
The Alexandria Bay investment banker disputed Hoffman’s claims of a 30 point lead, based on an internal poll, and on calls he says his campaign is making to Republican voters.
“Absolutely false,” said Doheny. “I don’t know who he’s calling but we have our own internal understanding as well….We will be victorious.”
There has been no independent poll of the race and Hoffman’s campaign never released details of the internal poll to back up the candidate’s claims.
He said Hoffman should promise to give up his Conservative Party nomination if he loses the Republican designation.
I’m the only conservative Republican who can send Bill Owens back to Plattsburgh,” Doheny said. “My opponent, last time, he failed. He has significantly less support this time.”
Hoffman came within a few thousand votes of defeating Owens in last year’s special election to replace John McHugh. Hoffman was running only on the Conservative Party line last year. He has the Conservative Party’s endorsement this year and has said he will stay in the race even if it’s only on the Conservative line.
