FULTON, NY – In January 2012, the death of Brian Dodge came as a shock to the Fulton City School District.
Dodge retired in 2010 after 32 years teaching Health Education, as well as coaching boys’ cross-country.
At Tuesday’s board of education meeting the board unanimously approved the implementation of the Brian Dodge Memorial Scholarship Award.
“I had the honor of being coached by Mr. Dodge my senior year of high school,” said board member Dan Pawlewicz, who coaches cross country in Hannibal. “I look up to him; he was a great man and an outstanding coach.”
The scholarship will be awarded to two graduating G. Ray Bodley seniors, one male and one female.
To be eligible for the scholarship the students must be members of the varsity cross-country and track teams, plan to attend college in the fall after his or her senior year, and plan to participate in running track or cross country in college.
“This is a great honor to give,” Pawlewicz added.
The scholarship is made possible by a donation from the Genesee Valley Harriers Running Club.
Recipients of the scholarship will be selected by a committee of the boys’ and girls’ cross-country and track coaches, athletic director, and high school principal.
Every year $200 will be awarded to each of the selected students, until the gift from the Running Club has been fully expended.
The district treasurer can accept additional funds to be added to the scholarship fund.
