FULTON – The Fulton Police Department is taking steps to tackle the growing issue of unlicensed and unregistered bikes on local streets. Chief Curtis informed the community that the department has been collaborating with the legal team to clarify the legal actions available regarding these bicycles.
As part of this initiative, officers have begun issuing tickets under specific circumstances. “The gentleman that was involved in the recent accident, who tragically passed away, had received a ticket from us in late August. He was clearly advised that riding that type of bike on the road is not allowed,” Chief Curtis explained. “It’s not registrable. You can only operate it like a bicycle. Despite being warned not to ride it, he chose to disregard our advice.”
The ticketing process involves pulling over the riders, issuing tickets, and requiring them to either walk or pedal away without starting the motor, as officers are limited in their legal capacity to address the situation further. Currently, officers are unable to impound these bikes, as the laws governing bicycles differ from those for motor vehicles.
Young adults comprise the majority of those receiving tickets for riding unregistered bikes. For underage riders, such as those on mini bikes, the approach differs; officers can contact parents to collect both the child and the bike.
In addition to unregistered bikes, the police are also addressing issues related to excessively loud vehicles. Recently, an individual on Utica Street received a ticket for lacking a proper muffler. Chief Curtis emphasized that while disturbing noise may lead to disorderly conduct citations, these remain ticketable offenses rather than arrestable ones.
As the department steps up enforcement, residents are urged to comply with regulations to ensure safety on Fulton’s streets.
