Grant-Funded New Gym Floor Highlights Safety Improvements At Fulton Family YMCA

New Gym Floor 2020

FULTON – The Fulton Family YMCA will unveil its new, safer gymnasium floor when it reopens Monday, Dec. 28 after the Christmas holiday.

The entire cost of the new floor and its installation was covered through a grant from the YMCA of the USA and through local fundraising. The Strata-Sport surface is made of synthetic rubber and will provide greater comfort and safety for YMCA members and others during workouts and group exercise classes while being very durable.

“It has been very satisfying to be able to continue to make our YMCA better during this most difficult time for our community. We’ve used the shutdown to brighten the appearance of our YMCA while making some significant improvements thanks to the support of grant funders like the YMCA of the USA, other funding organizations, and our members,” said Amy Leotta, Executive Director of the Fulton Family YMCA.

The new floor is just one of several safety and security-related improvements carried out during the year. Donations made it possible for the YMCA to install new air-filtration systems that use ultraviolet light to purify the air. The YMCA also replaced its aging, leaky roof. Local contractors were used for all of the work. YMCA staff also gave the facility an interior facelift, repainting the walls. Staff spend hours each day cleaning and sanitizing the facility.

During the current phase of the state’s response to the pandemic, the Fulton Family YMCA is operating on limited hours. The Y is open weekdays 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. but is closed from Noon – 3 p.m. weeks days for deep cleaning. Saturday hours are 8 a.m. to noon. The facility is closed on Sundays.

The Fulton Family YMCA is part of a powerful association of men, women and children committed to bringing about lasting personal and social change. With a focus on nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving the community health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors, the Y enables youth, adults, families and communities to be healthy, confident, connected and secure.
