HANNIBAL, NY – The Hannibal Board of Education has named an assistant principal at Kenney Middle School.
Michael Maxam was officially appointed to the post July 10 after a district search. Maxam was selected for the position from a group of seven initial candidates.
Maxam is certified as a vocational technology instructor and previously taught design and drafting at Jefferson-Lewis County BOCES. Before that, he worked for seven years teaching computer assisted drafting at Oswego County BOCES.
“He did his administrative internship at Fulton,†Superintendent Michael DiFabio said. DiFabio noted that Maxam served as summer school principal at Fulton in 2007. Prior to that, he served as assistant summer school principal in Central Square in 2003.
Maxam was appointed to serve with Patrick Keefe, the former assistant principal at Hannibal High School who was selected by the board of education to serve as principal at Kenney Middle School during the board’s May 14 meeting. Keefe’s appointment became effective June 1.
“I am very satisfied with our choice,†DiFabio said of Maxam’s appointment. “It was made based on a complete committee effort. Mr. Maxam meets the leadership style of Mr. Keefe and fits in nicely in our district.â€ÂÂ
DiFabio noted that the district is currently searching for a high school principal. Former high school principal Danielle Mahoney‘s resignation from that position became effective June 30. Interviews for that position are set to begin Wednesday.
“We had four good candidates for the position,†DiFabio said. “But our salary for the position is low and one person declined.â€ÂÂ
Tomorrow’s interviews will be followed by a review of the candidates’ credentials and reference checks, he noted.
“Hopefully we will have a candidate that fits in nicely,†DiFabio said. “If not, we will have to reopen the search.â€ÂÂ
DiFabio noted, too, that depending on the amount of time that the candidates are required to give for notice to prior employers, it is possible that the district may have its choice in place by Sept. 1.
“Once that is complete, we will be back to full board in our administrative team,†DiFabio said. He pointed out that that team is down by one, however, as the district opted to cut the assistant principal position for Fairley Elementary School.
