The plan to build homes on the site of the former Phillips St. School is moving forward.
Fulton city lawmakers recently approved giving ownership of the property to the Fulton Community Revitalization Corporation. The FCRC is a non-profit group headed by the city’s Community Development Agency, which builds or fixes up homes in the city to sell to first-time homeowners.
The Phillips St. lot has been a green space since 1996 when the old school building was torn down. Last year, the school district traded the land to the city in exchange for a piece of land next to G. Ray Bodley High School that students use for parking.
A state grant of $362,000 will allow the FCRC to build four homes and hook them into the city’s water and sewer system.
The homes will be between 1,100 and 1,400 square feet and will have 3 bedrooms and at least 1 1/2 bathrooms, according to Joe Fiumara, who heads the Fulton Community Development Agency.
The transfer of the property to FCRC allows the agency to advertise for bids to build the homes.
Another four homes are scheduled to be built on the lot in 2011, depending on the availability of grant funds.
Fiumara has said that the homes should sell quickly once they’re available because his agency has a long waiting list of prospective first-time homebuyers in its program.
