Liveblog: Election Night, 2007

NOTE: Refresh the page every 15 minutes or so to get the latest.

Ed Williamson’s your new town supervisor in Granby. He beat incumbent Kathy Duncan.

Looking for other surprises? There aren’t many.

“The Republican Party is alive and well not only in the city of Fulton but in the county of Oswego,” said Dave Fontecchio, Fulton city GOP chair. Republicans will reassert control of the Legislature and have solid control of the Common Councils of both Oswego and Fulton.

Read our full coverage in the morning. Till then, nighty night (and will someone please pull down all those election lawn signs before they’re snowed over?).

Updated 10:10 p.m.

County Legislature:

Margaret Kastler’s made the whole fight worthwhile. She beat former legislator Wayne Lindsay for the legislature seat from the Sandy Creek area. Kastler’s appointment to the seat was help by soon-to-be-former Legislature Chair Russ Johnson and the coalition of a few Republicans and all of the Democrats. Now, she’s got the seat for real.

The only mild surprise is in Scriba, where legislator Tom Bullard (no relation to your writer) has lost to former town supervisor current town board member Jim Oldenburg. [Jim — thanks for writing to ask for the correction. I shouldn’t be let near high speed publishing tools sometimes 😉 ]

The thrashing of Russ Johnson is official. Lou LeClair (Disclosure, again: She works for us selling advertising) beat Johnson by a 2-1 margin.

Lee Walker’s win in Oswego gives Democrats six of the 25 Legislature seats. One or two of the Republicans will occasionally vote with them, but Russ Johnson’s loss will dissolve his coalition and the traditional Republicans will reassert authority. Translation: Democrats go back to the position they’ve held without interruption since the end of the Civil War: the ignorable minority.

60% of the vote’s in in Hannibal as I write this.

Ron Greenleaf holds a lead for Town Supervisor over Charles Reed, but the lead’s not much. Democrats Rita Hooper and Sandy Blanchard hold solid leads in the town council race. Dan Mahaney leads the race for Highway Superintendent.

Jack Beckwith’s holding a lead over Judy O’Connor Walsh in the county legislature race from Hannibal, with half the vote in.

County Legislature is next…

“I’m just glad it’s over.” First words from Ron Woodward, new Mayor-elect of Fulton. He beat three challengers and he’s partying with Republicans at the Polish Home in Fulton. City Republicans have a lot to celebrate. Bob Weston will, come January, return to his traditional position as the only Democrat on the Common Council. Ton Kenyon won in the first ward, Dave Guyer beat Democrat Dan Knopp in the second. Ken Myers was unopposed in the fourth ward. Norman Foster in the fifth ward. Russ Hayden won in the sixth.

City of Oswego time. Randy Bateman’s unopposed for Mayor. Connie Cosemento beat Jim Scanlon for the first ward Council seat. Michael Myers beat Kirk Coates for sec0nd ward Council. Sue Sweet holds a50 vote lead over incumbent Ed Harrington with all the votes counted. Shawn Walker has a small lead over Gerold Brown in the fourth ward. Dan Donovan’s unopposed in the fifth. William Sharkey and Tim Rice are separated by exactly one vote with 75% of the votes counted. This one will go to the absentee ballots, more than likely. Nothing in yet from the 7th ward, where Dick Atkins and Michael Joyce are battling.

More to come ..

Updated 9:30 p.m. Results coming fast.

It’s safe to say Randy Bateman will be Oswego’s next Mayor. He’s unopposed. And it’s becoming safe to say Ron Woodward will be Mayor of Fulton come January. With 42% of the vote in, he’s got more votes than all three of his challengers combined.

Fulton’s Republicans are partying at the Polish Home. Our Nicole Reome says there’s “lots of screaming, lots of excitement” as the victories pile up.

First notable change: Legislature Chairman Russ Johnson has lost his seat on the legislature. Newcomer Louella LeClair (Disclosure: She sells advertising for us.) has posted a victory. Johnson was a Republican who lost his party’s primary to LeClair, but stayed on the ballot as a Democrat.

Also, Fulton Common Council member Dan Knopp has lost his bid to keep the seat. Republican Dave Guyer beat him tonight. Knopp had been appointed to fill a vacancy on the council this year.

Chairman Johnson may be out, but a former chairman may be on his way back in. Morris Sorbello holds a commanding lead over legislator Mike French, running as an independent.

In Oswego, Lee Walker holds a lead late over Imogene LeFort in the race for county legislature.

More coming….

Posted: 9:15 p.m. Well, let’s get this party started.

A few results have begun to trickle in, mostly from Fulton, where Ron Woodward holds an early lead over three challengers in the race to succeed Mayor Daryl Hayden. Ron’s the current Executive Assistant to Hayden and used to be Mayor and a member of the Common Council.

With about half the vote in in the 2nd Ward, Republican Dave Guyer holds a substantial lead in the race for Fulton Common Council. He’s got a 3-to-1 margin over Dan Knopp, the Democrat appointed by Hayden earlier this year to fill a vacancy.

In Hannibal, a quarter of the vote is in, and incumbent county legislator Jack Beckwith’s got a fight on his hands with Democrat Judy O’Connor Walsh. He’s got a 30 vote lead. Also, the town supervisor race is very, very close — Ron Greenleaf holds a four vote lead over Charles Reed with a fifth of the vote in. Rita Hooper and Sandra Blanchard hold early leads in the race for Hannibal Town Council.

A sixth of the vote is in in Fulton’s 24th County Legislature district, and longtime incumbent Clayt Brewer’s holding a small lead over businessman Mark Fruce, who lost to Brewer in the Republican primary.
