MEXICO, NY – The students in Dave Marsden’s Motorsports Fabrication program at Oswego County BOCES recently won an award for the “Most Creative Chopper†at the second annual Mini-Chopper Biker Build-Off held at Monroe Community College in Rochester.
As a class project, the students built a diesel-powered trike.
Several students began building the vehicle just after Christmas break in preparation for the May 1 competition.
Several ideas were discussed and the plans were made to build a tricycle that would be powered by a diesel engine prepared by Dave Perkins’ Auto Engine class at OCB and fueled by bio-diesel produced by Jim Loomis’ Auto Services class at OCB.
The fabrication students made a plan for the vehicle, designed and built component parts along with fabricating and welding the chassis.
The students traveled to MCC for the competition to compete against bikes built by several other BOCES from across New York State.
After judging was complete, the OCB bike was awarded first place in the competition for the second year in a row.
Other members of the fabrication class built an “old-school†chopper to take to the competition.
That bike earned an honorable mention.
Other class members built a robot to enter in the Sumobot competition held on the same day at MCC.
Sumobot is a robot war-type of competition where the objective is to push the opponent off a table that is six feet in diameter.
The students made it to the second round of competition before being eliminated.
This was this first time the Motorsports Fabrication class has competed in the Sumobot competition.
