Assemblyman Will Barclay (Pulaski-R,C,I) today announced that the National Park Service’s Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor has launched an excellence awards program. The awards will honor significant places along the canal.

“The Erie Canal has become a national tourist attraction. From bike trails to updated infrastructure, communities across the state have invested in their own backyard canalways and turned them back into central gathering places for community events and activities,” said Barclay.

The National Parks Service will accept applications for the Erie Canalway National Heritage Award of Excellence through July 15. The award is intended to “showcase those places where people have come together to contribute their time, talent, creativity, enthusiasm and hard work to make their part of the Canalaway Corridor a vibrant place to live, work or play,” according to the National Parks Service.

Barclay encouraged people to nominate their community canalways.

“We have so much to celebrate in this region with the Erie Canal. People have worked and volunteered countless hours to provide a place where people can enjoy nature, exercise and have a nice place to showcase local talent,” said Barclay

To obtain an application, visit www.eriecanalway.org/award.asp. The Erie Canalway also holds a photo contest every year. To submit photos for consideration that showcase each area’s uniqueness, visit www.eriecanalway.org. Photos will be accepted until Sept. 15.
