OSWEGO, NY – Oswego’s Community Block Party kicked off a new season May 29 in downtown.
A large crowd took advantage of the pleasant weather to enjoy many of their Oswego Farmers’ Market favorites including fresh fruits and vegetables, arts and crafts, music, kettle corn and Man In The Moon Candies.
Dr. Mary Walker (Rosemary Nesbitt) was on hand opening night to help promote the 160th anniversary of the granting of the Port City’s charter.
“We’re going to have a ceremony in which we reenact the presenting of the charter on the Veterans’ Stage (6 p.m.) on June 11,” she said. “Bob Bateman (Cakes Galore) will bake a beautiful city birthday cake for the celebration, and we’re inviting everyone to take part.”
Debbi Murray and her children Chris and Jessie, sampled some of the Man In The Moon Candies.
“She has the best candies,” Debbi said.
The market continues June 5 from 5-9 p.m. in downtown Oswego on West First Street between Bridge and Oneida streets.
Fidelis Health will sponsor a performance by local favorites, Halfway to Nowhere featuring “Oswego Idol†Tammy Stewart on vocals.
The band will be performing a familiar mix of rock ‘n’ roll oldies and country music.
The market features more than 50 vendors offering a selection of fresh produce, homemade baked goods and delicacies, honey, maple syrup, and plenty of arts and crafts along with other crowd favorites such as fresh squeezed lemonade, fried dough, Italian sausages and more.
New items at the market include: fresh and dried herbs; Amish cheese; handmade soaps; handcrafted wooden baskets and bowls; an Old Fashioned Soda Wagon and more.
Oswego Farmers’ Market manager Gail Goebricher of the Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber said she was relieved to get the market off to a successful opening night, in light of the Route 104 bridge closing.
“It’s going great. It’s fantastic, superb,” she said. “It’s a very nice crowd and wonderful weather; I hope it goes like this the rest of the summer.”
There are a lot of new vendors, she added.
Vendors have come in from as far away as Martville, Baldwinsville, Liverpool and Watertown, she said.
“I have a whole mess of new vendors I’m real pleased with. Each week we’re adding more,” she said.
Goebricher noted that market-goers also have the opportunity to help support the annual Central New York Great Pumpkin Festival.
There will be 50 / 50 raffle tickets available at the chamber booth each week of the market. The winning ticket will be drawn during the Pumpkin Festival on Oct. 5. You need not be present to win.
For the safety of the pet, as well as the general public, animals are prohibited from the market.
The Oswego Farmers’ Market continues each Thursday night through Oct. 9.
