Senator Aubertine Declines NYPA Chairmanship

State Sen. Darrel J. Aubertine (D-Cape Vincent) confirmed today that he was offered the chairmanship of the New York Power Authority (NYPA), but turned it down to continue representing the 48th Senate District.

“I was offered the opportunity to serve as NYPA chairman last week,” Sen. Aubertine said. “I’m certainly very, very flattered to not only have been considered, but to have been offered the position. After discussions with my family and friends, my decision was to keep my commitment to the people of the 48th Senate District.”

The offer to Sen. Aubertine would have more than doubled his current compensation as a lawmaker. NYPA operates 18 generating facilities and maintains more than 1,400 circuit miles of transmission lines. It sells power to government agencies; to community-owned electric systems and rural electric cooperatives; to job-producing companies; to private utilities for resale—without profit—to their customers; and to neighboring states, under federal requirements.

“Certainly, this would have been a beneficial financial move for me and my family,” Sen. Aubertine said. “However, in the end, I decided that I enjoy serving the people of Central and Northern New York in the state Legislature too much to walk away. The voters selected me and I have committed myself to representing them.”
