Spring 2008 Was A Tad Warmer, Drier Than Average

OSWEGO, NY – Summer may have gotten off to a slightly wet start, but spring was actually drier than normal.

The total precipitation for the spring of 2008 was 9.82 inches, according to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service.

“That’s 0.03-inch below where we should be,” he said. The average temperature was 45 degrees and that’s 0.5-degree above average. That really surprised me. With the way the spring was going I thought it’d turn out wetter and colder.”

For the purpose of his report, Gregway breaks the seasons into four three-month blocks. Spring is March, April and May.

The area saw 54 percent of the possible amount of sunshine. That’s 10 percentages above average, Gregway said.

There were 36 cloudy days, 38 partly cloudy days and 18 clear days this spring.

Snowfall for the spring topped out at 18.6 inches. That is 5 inches below average.

There were 3 thunderstorms and 2 foggy days this spring.

The highest temperature for the spring was 84 degrees on April 26 and the lowest was 15 degrees on March 10 and 13.

The month of April 2008 was the warmest April on record, Gregway added.
