The Reading First Department at Michael A. Maroun Elementary School challenged students at the school to go one whole week without television and students were eager to try.
During the week of April 21st children were encouraged to do other things at home instead of watching television. Turn off the TV week encourages adults and children to reduce the amount of television they watch in order to promote richer, healthier and more connected lives. Families were encouraged to play a board game, read a new book, write a story, play outside, go fishing or other alternatives to daily television watching.
The school organized activities and themed days throughout the week including game night at the school, get caught reading between 7 and 8 p.m. where teachers called student homes and if they were reading during that time they received a prize and much more. Students who gave up TV returned a slip each morning signed by their parents which was entered in a daily drawing. Prizes were awarded to those students whose name was drawn each day. An actual voting booth was brought in to the school and students voted for their favorite alternative activity to watching television. Prizes were donated by area businesses.
