FULTON, NY – The John Wells Pratt House Museum of Fulton has held the annual Parade of Trees for roughly 35 years.
Developed as a way for the residents of the city of Fulton and local businesses and organizations to come together during the holiday season, the event has only grown with each passing year.
Today, the event is open to any school, non-profit organization or business that is interested in entering a decorated tree for the contest.
Any person or group interested may enter a decorated Christmas tree in any of the four categories including adult, youth, child or business.
The trees will then be put on display at the Pratt House for community members to vote on their favorite tree in each category over the course of a two-week period.
Although the business entries are not eligible for a cash prize, the other three categories offer a cash prize for the top three finishers that are not for profit organizations, groups or individuals.
First place winners were awarded $100 from local sponsor, Fulton Savings Bank.
Second place winners were awarded $75 from local sponsor, OVIA of Fulton.
Third place winners were awarded $50 from local sponsors, Edward Jones, Blue Moon Grill and Gosh Lighting.
“Any business that enters the contest gets a certificate of appreciation and a little free advertising to boot!” said Susan Lane of the Pratt House.
First place winners in the adult division went to ARC, Oswego County.
“Their theme was Jungle bells. All of the ornaments were made from pine combs that they painted, affixed glitter to and then added jingle bells to. All of the members of the organization worked to make this tree absolutely beautiful this year!” said Susan Lane.
First place winners in the youth division went to Gracia Thompson’s high school class.
“Their theme was Our Tree was one in a MINION! All of her students come up with their theme each year and then they start making the decorations. This years theme was the Minions movie. They use this event as a life experience, working together in the production of the ornaments and the decorating of the tree,” said Lane.
First place winners for the children division went to Fulton Public Library Reading Room.
“Their theme this year was A Frosty Christmas. The children, ages 3-5 years old, made the decorations and then with the help of some of the staff, the tree comes to life!” said Lane.
Second place winners in the adult division went to Fulton Women’s Club.
“Their theme was The Eyes Have It. Their tree was decorated with eye glasses and at the end of the show. The glasses are being donated to the Lions Club, for their glass drive. Their prize money will be given the Lions Club as well,” said Lane.
Second place in the youth division went to Lanigan Fourth Grade.
“Their theme was: I Love NY. Everything on their tree was something found in NY state, grapes from wineries, our state bird, our state flower and outlines of the state that they turned into ornaments. Their tree skirt was 2 maps of NY State. How creative!” said Lane.
Second place winners in the children’s division went to Noah’s Christian Nursery School.
“Their theme was Angels, so the tree was decorated with the children’s faces that they attached angel wings to,” said Lane.
Third place in the adult division went to Oswego industries Life Day-Hab Program.
“Their theme was: A Starry Starry Christmas. The tree was decorated all in gold stars; all handmade by the workers. They glittered each of the stars and arranged them on a garland of gold,” Lane said.
Third place in the youth division went to All Saints Episcopal Church, Sunday School Class.
“Their theme: Peace on Earth. The children decorated peace signs and made angels with each of their names. The tree topper was a picture of children from around the world holding hands in a circle. This was the first year for this group!” said Lane.
Third place in the children’s division went to Mrs. Long’s Little Monster’s, Fairgreive Elementary School.
“Their theme: Little monsters. Each of the children used a coffee filter to make a monster and then attach their face. After that they were allowed to make other monstrous ornaments and put them on the tree too! This was their first year in our Parade of Trees contest,” said Lane.
The business winner for this year went to Kathy’s Cakes and Specialty Treats.
“Their theme was Fulton. All of the ornaments were made from gingerbread and were depictions of Fulton shops and businesses! Besides being a really awesome looking tree, it smelled divine!” said Lane.
With the closing of their annual Parade of Trees, the Pratt House workers wish the community a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
