YMCA Receives Grant To Support Emergency Childcare For First Responders, Community Shepherding Program

FULTON – The Fulton Family YMCA has been awarded an $11,000 grant to support two programs that are responses to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The grant was provided by the Oswego County COVID-19 Fund, an affiliate fund of the Central New York Community Foundation. Support has been provided by the Richard S. Shineman Foundation, the United Way of Greater Oswego County, and the Oswego County Community Foundation.

The grant will provide support for the YMCA’s emergency childcare program and its community shepherding program. The YMCA is offering day care services to the children of essential workers at its closed facility, including free breakfast, lunch and snack as well as providing time to complete homework, physical and outdoor activity and arts and crafts.

The shepherding program connects YMCA staff to members and others in the community in order to link them to community resources to cope with the effects of the virus and shutdown, including delivering boxes of donated fresh food to their homes.

“Our doors may be closed but we have not stopped working for the people of the Fulton area,” said Amy Leotta, YMCA Director. “We thank the Oswego County COVID-19 Fund for stepping up in our community’s time of need to support vital programs and services.”

Though the building is closed, the YMCA has continued to offer some services online, such as music lessons and exercises to do at home.

Thanks to other grant funding, some YMCA staff members have returned from furlough to give the building a deep cleaning and sanitizing as well as painting the equipment room. They are also planning the relaunch of programs and services, including new offerings, once the facility is allowed to reopen.

The Fulton Family YMCA is part of a powerful association of men, women and children committed to bringing about lasting personal and social change.

With a focus on nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving the community health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors, the Y enables youth, adults, families and communities to be healthy, confident, connected and secure.
