OSWEGO COUNTY – Northern Oswego County’s twin Villages – Sandy Creek and Lacona – were the scene of a series of memorial rituals on the morning of May 29, 2023.

Clear blue skies and summer-like temperatures greeted the observants as they made their way along the route of remembrance.

Several readings of the Honor Roll – a list of the names of local citizens killed in the United States’ many wars, took place at honored locations throughout the villages, and at the Cable Trail VFW Post in Lacona.

Rifle salutes and the sound of Taps played by the Sandy Creek Central School music students, echoed through the normally quiet streets as the flag was raised and saluted by veterans of all branches of the Armed forces and a large group of local citizens.

The parade passed under the portraits of many of the area’s veterans, illustrated on banners lining the streets – part of the Villages recent Hometown Heroes effort; spearheaded by local group 315 Military Moms to honor those who have served.

The focus of the activities of May 29, however, was the remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice; giving their lives to ensure that those of us who live in big cities or quiet small towns such as Sandy Creek or Lacona can enjoy a safe existence here in the United States.
