MEXICO, NY – Children residing in the Mexico area were recently given the opportunity to interact with volunteer Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT)  from the Donald McFee Memorial Ambulance Service at a community building event sponsored and hosted by Mexico’s Public Library.

EMT’s were stationed at the library during the mid-day hours of Wednesday, July 19, offering ambulance tours and helping youngsters to assemble their own first aid kit to take home.

This event serves as an opportunity for members of Mexico’s ever dependable (founded in 1972) ambulance service to make positive connections with young people in the community, while helping to familiarize children with emergency services.

As the contents of the first aid kits were assembled, the patient EMT’s described the uses of each item, finishing the kit with a shiny Red Cross sticker. Children were then allowed to climb into McFee Unit #3, and were shown the contents of the myriad door and drawers, as well as a demonstration of the vehicles communication gear.

Ambulance volunteers use events such as this to make ambulance rides and interactions with first responders less scary, and of course, to hopefully light a spark in the mind of a young person that may lead to them becoming an emergency service volunteer in the future.

This event is just one of the many happenings made possible by the Outreach Specialists at the Mexico Public Library, a community center offering so much more than books.
