Oswego County Federal Credit Union (OCFCU), recently announced that Atom Z. Avery, 33, a member of their board, has been recognized by the Sept. 2012 Credit Union Times as an outstanding leader, said Bill Carhart, OCFCU CEO.
“Atom is one of only ten credit union leaders across the country who received this honor,” Carhart said. According to the publication (www.cutimes.com): “Young, motivated and fearless, these 10 professionals…all have the same goal in mind: bring innovative ideas to credit unions and see that they achieve growth and success.”
“Atom has been invaluable in helping us develop an iPhone App, as well as an online program that allows our members to view all of their financial data,” Carhart said.
“I was surprised and honored when I heard the news,” Avery said. “ This has been a great board for me to serve on and I look forward to our continued success.”
Avery, an Oswego native, has owned Avery Rental Properties LLC since 1999 and All Season Inn Corp. since 2009. Among his properties is the Beacon Hotel, 75 W. Bridge St., Oswego, which is a renovated historic building.
“I have served on other boards in the past that were not my passion,” Avery said. “ I realized quickly that financing and helping our members achieve their dreams was something I wanted to be a part of.
“I think CU boards/committees need young voices to keep the committee abreast of new desires and the needs of the members at-large. For example, with changing technology, younger members often have fresh ideas and the energy to go after implementing them. There is tremendous knowledge and perspective, however, to be gained from older board members. I don’t believe a person’s age is as important as their willingness to listen to new ideas, learn from the past, and improve the present.”
In July, OCFCU announced construction of a new office on the corner of E. 4th and Bridge St., Oswego that will replace their 175 E. 7th St. office, Carhart said. It will be about, 3,500 sq. ft. —about twice the size of the E 7th. St. office—and it features two drive-through lanes and a drive-through ATM, among other member services. Construction will be completed in early winter this year.
In Dec. 2010, OCFCU opened a brand new office in Mexico at 5828 Scenic Ave. (Route 3) where they converted and renovated the village’s former railroad depot into a modern credit union, Carhart said. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. The credit union’s third office is at 300 W. 1st St. in Oswego.
Founded in 1975, OCFCU is a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative association, which serves more than 6,300 members from throughout Oswego County. OCFCU’s charter was revised in early 2007 so that anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Oswego County is eligible to join.
