OSWEGO – An early morning house fire challenged Firefighters and displaced four residents in the City of Oswego. The Oswego Fire Department was dispatched at 1:53am for a structure fire at 231 East 5th Street, arriving minutes later to find flames roaring above the roofline of the occupied multi family single story home.
The Oswego Police Department was first on scene, and assisted residents to safety. Firefighters arrived shortly after and deployed hoselines to begin extinguishing the flames, while other Firefighters conducted a primary search for any trapped occupants. The fire extended to the void spaces in the walls and into the attic, challenging Firefighters as they quickly conducted overhaul efforts to save the home. Firefighters spent the next 30 minutes pulling walls and ceilings apart to expose hidden pockets of flames.
The fire was declared under control at 2:24am. The home sustained considerable fire damage to the apartment of origin and front exterior wall and roofline, the rear apartment sustained minor smoke damage.
City of Oswego Fire Chief Paul Conzone commended the efforts of his team of Firefighters, stating “Our personnel did a tremendous job saving this home in very City of Oswego Fire Department Robert A. challenging weather conditions. Getting water on the fire quickly made the difference, a task not so easy with temperatures in the 20’s and lake effect snow. A power line also dropped right in front of the home after burning through, causing a quick shift in tactics. Special thanks to our partners that helped out, especially to the Oswego Police Officers that assisted the occupants to safety.”
The Oswego Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Oswego Police Department, Fulton Fire Department, Novelis Fire Department, Menter Ambulance, the Oswego County Fire Coordinator’s Office, and National Grid. The Scriba Fire Department assisted in city coverage during the fire, and the displaced residents are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and appears to be accidental.
