Art Association Of Oswego Features Two Exhibitions On View

“The Stag Sweeney” by Michael Flanagan. Acrylic on canvas, 14 x 50".

OSWEGO, NY – The Art Association of Oswego has two exhibitions currently on view: “Recently: Paintings by Michael Flanagan are showing in the Timothy McHenry Gallery, and “Six Weeks“: Oswego County High School Invitational Artwork in the Kirk Beason Gallery.

From Michael Flanagan: ‘My strong and obvious interest in animals has not wavered since childhood. Ideas and images around music, history, and especially art history also seep in. I try to find meaning in the long (and potentially cliched) tradition of landscape painting. Though idiosyncratic results are not the primary goal, it is a likely outcome if one approaches the ‘problem’ with honesty, an open mind, and most importantly a sense of play.’

“Almost” by Christina Morse. Acrylic on wood panel, 24 x 48″.

About “Six Weeks”: Students were referred by art teachers from eight county high schools. Each skillful in their chosen medium. Three practicing artists worked alongside them, teaching by doing, with an occasional demonstration. This structure allowed for personal creativity to flourish, with little interruption. No bells ringing. No lectures. A significant departure from a more structured educational approach. The elder artists worked side-by-side in a ‘senior peer’ rather than ‘instructor’ status. This was an active studio, not a classroom.

The exhibitions can be viewed during open hours Tuesday – Friday, 9 – 3:30 p.m., Saturday from 10 – 1 p.m., and Sunday 1 – 4 p.m. There will be a closing reception for both shows on Saturday, September 9, from 6 – 8 p.m.

“Six Weeks” is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.
