OSWEGO, NY – At the end, Uno will be left standing.
However, to start things off, organizers hope there will be more than a thousand.
“The Oswego City-County Youth Bureau is working with the Oswego YMCA (along with others) to set a new world record. No, it is not golf ball stacking,” Brian Chetney said alluding to an event held at a recent Youth Day at Camp Hollis. “It is the world’s largest Uno game.”
Organizers have already contacted Guinness and are well on their way to setting the record, the Youth Services Specialist continued.
The event is going to take place Nov. 8 at the Armory in Oswego.
“It’s going to be a huge community event. It takes the community to make a difference and set the record,” according to Mike Perkins of the YMCA Armory.
The goal is to start with at least 1,000 players, Perkins said.
There will be 100 tables; each will have its own deck of Uno cards. Perkins wants to have 10 players at each table.
The winner from each table will move on to the next round until there is only one player left.
The object of the game is to get rid of your card; and when you’re down to you last card, you have to say, “Uno! Or else you’ll be penalized.
Complete rules will be available the day of the tournament and a briefing will be held prior to the start of play.
Registration will start at 11 a.m. with competition commencing around noon or 12:30 p.m., Perkins explained.
“It’s probably take a while to get going. We hope there are a lot of people. Plus we have to be very specific in how we do everything to make sure we meet the requirements set by Guinness,” Perkins said. “Our goal is to start with 1,000 players; but the more the merrier. This is a game the whole family can play.”
One thousand players may be a bit of overkill, considering the current world record as set by a group in West Virginia with 330 players.
“I want to be sure we get the record. I want to put Oswego on the map,” Perkins explained. “Besides, I want to give the next group a tough time to break our record!”
“Brian and I were talking about stuff. We were looking for something fun and constructive for youth to do. We had discussed a few things and said, ‘what else can we do?'” Perkins said. “So, I said, ‘how about going for a world record?'”
He did some research on activities the entire family could participate in and came across the record Uno players.
It can take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes (sometimes more) to complete a game.
Refreshments will be available.
“It’s such a good idea; it’s a positive for Oswego,” Perkins noted. “It’s a great way for the family to have fun together.”
Besides the Youth Bureau and YMCA, Novelis and Reality Check will help organize the world record attempt.
“We still need players, and a lot of volunteers,” Perkins said.
There will be a trophy for the winner. There could also be other prizes as well.
