OSWEGO – The City of Oswego is proud to announce the dedication of its new performance stage as the David A. Sterio Memorial Stage, honoring the life, legacy, and extraordinary musical contributions of longtime resident David Allan Sterio.
Sterio, who passed unexpectedly on August 25, 2023, at the age of 63, was born, raised, and remained a lifetime resident of Oswego. His influence on the city’s cultural, musical, and civic life touched generations of residents, students, and fellow musicians.
A graduate of Oswego High School, Sterio went on to receive his Bachelor of Music Education and Performance from Ithaca College. From a young age, David immersed himself in Oswego’s musical community. He performed with the Oswego City Band beginning in middle school under the direction of Weldon “Slim” Gross and later became a distinguished member of Stan Gosek’s Jazz Band, where he played lead saxophone and clarinet.
Carrying on the legacy of his father and mentor, Nick Sterio, David was deeply involved with Nick Sterio & His Orchestra, performing at venues across Central New York for decades. His musical versatility, leadership, and passion made him a pillar of Oswego’s arts community. At the time of his passing, he served as president of the Musicians’ Union of Oswego County Local #267-441.
Beyond his musical achievements, Sterio dedicated himself to public service and education. He served on the Oswego Town Board; worked as a journeyman electrician and project manager with Knapp Electric; served as Town of Oswego Highway Superintendent; and taught within the Oswego City School District. He later became the first manager of the Ralph M. Faust Theatre at Oswego High School, shaping the early development of the venue and mentoring students in the performing arts.
The stage dedication took place at the City of Oswego Tree Lighting on Saturday, November 29, 2025. Mayor Robert A. Corradino noted that naming the stage in Sterio’s honor is a meaningful tribute to a man who embodied the spirit of community, creativity, and service.
“David Sterio’s life was woven into the fabric of Oswego — through his music, his leadership, his mentorship, and his unwavering dedication to the people of this city,” Mayor Corradino said. “The David A. Sterio Memorial Stage will stand as a lasting symbol of his talent, generosity, and the joy he brought to so many. His contributions will continue to echo throughout Oswego for generations.”
