OSWEGO – The Common Council sailed through a relatively light agenda this week.
Councilors approved the use of public space for Mary Kay Stone on behalf of the Friends of Fort Ontario in order to host the Madeline Festival on June 1.
It will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fort Ontario Complex and the nearby Oswego Civic Arts Center at the end of East Fourth Street.
The annual festival celebrates the children’s book character, Madeline, and her real-life connection to Oswego.
Ludwig Bemelmans, author of the popular children’s books about a little girl named Madeline, served as a private in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Ontario in 1917.

Among the other action:
Councilors approved the use of public space for Lois O’Connor; the owner of a single-family home at 94 W. Schuyler St., wants to install a new front porch and step.
And, they OK’d the use of public space for Anthony Pauldine; the owner of commercial property at 197-203 W. First St., wants to place an A-frame sign.
The council approved use of city properties for Jonathan Evans; the senior pastor of Elim Grace Church requested the use May 11 in order to hold a Service Oswego event.
A request by Ann-Marie King and Bernard Galka, representatives of The Connection Point, for use of public space on May 2 in order to hold an outdoor prayer initiative was also approved.
A use of public space request from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation was approved.
They wish to place a small chest freezer (5 cubic feet) at Wright’s Landing to collect Coho salmon caught during the 2019 season, April through September, for a tagging project.
Councilors approved the use of Breitbeck Park for a wedding ceremony to be held on August 24.
Use of Washington Square Park (East Park) by the Oswego Federal Credit Union in order to host “Movies in the Park” was OK’d.
The dates will be June 26 with a rain date on June 27 and August 21 with a rain date on August 22.
The council approved a Solid Waste License for the year 2019.
Kennedy Valve was approved as the preferred supplier for the purchase of fire hydrants for the city.
Onondaga County Purchasing was authorized to solicit a Request for Proposals for fish cleaning services for the city of Oswego.
