Firefighters Quell Mary Street Blaze

OSWEGO – Oswego firefighters made quick work of a structure fire at 1 Mary Street this morning (Feb. 3).

Residents were alerted to the issue by the smoke detectors, immediately exited, and called 911.

Firefighters arrived quickly and reported a smoke condition in the two-family home.

Crews conducted a search of the two apartments for any trapped victims, and looked for the location of the fire.

Firefighters located an active fire in the basement and quickly extinguished the flames with a hoseline.

The fire was contained to a clothes dryer and the area surrounding it.

The structure was ventilated and turned back over to the residents and property owner with little damage.

Fire officials credit working smoke alarms, early notification to 911, and the quick response of the fire department to containing the fire.

No injuries were reported and crews were back in service after about an hour.

Chief Randy Griffin added, “Our firefighters did a great job in controlling this basement fire, and the occupants did exactly what they were supposed to do as well. The occupants smelled smoke, heard the smoke alarm sounding, evacuated, and called 911. Because of the early notification of the fire, and the quick response by our firefighters, we were able to return the home to the occupants with little damage.”

  1. A blessing, really. And another reason not to leave a dryer unattened, nor one without filter emptied every day or after each individual uses it! I never knew that, so I’m passing that info on to you!
