OSWEGO, NY – On April 7, at approximately 4 p.m., the Oswego City Police Department arrested Craig A. Bradley, 45, of 39 Dutchess Lane, Fulton, on an active bench warrant issued out of Oswego County Court on Feb. 24, 2011.
The warrant was issued as a result of Bradley allegedly failing to pay restitution for an original charge of Body Stealing, section 4216 of the Public Health Law, a class D felony.
The original incident occurred on Aug. 8, 1995, for which Bradley was arrested on Sept. 26, 1995.
In response to extensive inquiry from the media, the Oswego City Police Department is releasing the following information from the original investigative case file:
On August 10, 1995 at approximately 10 a.m., Oswego City Police responded to St. Paul’s Cemetery, located on Mitchell Street, for reported criminal mischief to an underground mausoleum.
Original reports describe the mausoleum as, “… a small, underground cement room with cement steps leading up to the ground level entrance.”
Further description contained in the reports indicate that the mausoleum held four bodies in separate burial chambers, and that it was a family mausoleum purchased in the mid 1800s, in which the last burial occurred in 1916.
The investigation determined that Bradley had utilized a hammer and crowbar to forcibly remove a large, heavy metal gate covering the entrance to the mausoleum.
Bradley then entered the mausoleum and used the same tools to break a hole in the concrete of one of the burial chambers, exposing the casket inside.
The wooden casket was described as badly decayed, which exposed the remains inside.
Bradley removed two human skulls from within the chamber.
The skulls were later recovered inside of Bradley’s residence at the time, located in Black Walnut trailer park on State Route 104 East, Oswego, NY.
Bradley was also charged at the time with Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree, a class D felony, and Criminal Trespass in the Third Degree, a class B misdemeanor.
The cost to repair the mausoleum was estimated to be $6,160.
