Workers will actually start digging in at East Utica and First streets today (Aug. 27).
Customers should be digging into the Canadian-based restaurant’s famous apple fritters, coffee and much more by Oct. 27, according to Jack Krisanda, the real estate manager for Tim Hortons.
The reception they have received in this area “has been absolutely fantastic,” he said.
“It’s really pro-development, pro-getting people in here to get the economy going. They’ve been absolutely great,” he said of working with city officials including Mayor Randy Bateman and Community Development Director Mary Vanouse.â€ÂÂ
October 27 is a target date, Krisanda noted.
When you actually start to dig, you’re not always sure of what you’ll find, “you always find some surprises,” he said, adding, “We know there is a slab of the original concrete under here; so we have to do some cutting through that, only sections of it. It’s 16 inches thick, it’s not going anywhere.”
“If Harborfest is any indication of how our success will be here in Oswego it will be a great reception,” said Jon Maurer, regional marketing manager for Tim Hortons. “I gave away 2,500 cups of iced coffee and 1,500 cups of hot coffee.
The population count, traffic count and the location in general were huge in attracting Tim Hortons to Oswego, according to Krisanda.
“You look at the traffic going by here, it’s just phenomenal. A lot of people go this way heading to work, plus you get all of the traffic coming up this way,” he said.
Located in the Fourth Ward, the restaurant will employee 30 people, Maurer said.
That doesn’t include the jobs that will be generated through landscaping, snowplowing and transportation of food and other materials.
Tim Hortons will offer a full line of soups, chili and sandwiches besides its famous apple fritters. They will also have espresso drinks and a soft frozen lemonade.
As it gets closer to opening day in Oswego, people can check the company’s progress at www.somethingisbrewing.com, according to Maurer.
Eventually, they will be looking at other sites in the Port City, Krisanda said.
“It’s a fantastic location. You can’t get better than this,” he said.
