SYRACUSE, NY – The Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology (MOST) announced it will bring a 45-minute science demonstration to all 78 sixth grade classes in 16 schools throughout Oswego County – a total of nearly 1,400 students.
The museum’s Oswego County Science on the Go program is made possible due to a $40,000 grant awarded by the Richard S. Shineman Foundation.
“Our foundation is very excited about the opportunity to support this program”, said Karen Goetz, executive director of the Richard S. Shineman Foundation. “This is the first time that one of our grant awards will benefit every school district in Oswego County. The MOST’s program truly fits with our foundation’s mission to be a catalyst for positive change in Oswego County.”
The objective of Oswego County Science on the Go is to maintain student interest in and knowledge of science, which according to 2015-2016 New York State science exams, shows decline between fourth and eighth grade.
Teachers are offered the option to choose among three different science demonstrations that meet New York State and Next Generation Science Standards for the sixth grade curriculum – Superhero Science: The Power Behind the Hero; Animal Adaptations: Real Animal Skulls; and Ready, Set, Spin! Keep Moving.
All science demonstrations will be given by a MOST Science Educator and supplement classroom learning.
“For the first time in its history, the MOST will provide educational programming in Oswego County. This is the first grant awarded to the MOST by the Shineman Foundation, and we are excited for our partnership to bring science to life in sixth grade classrooms with Oswego County Science on the Go,” said Lauren Kochian, executive vice president of the MOST. “The museum looks forward to offering science demonstrations, and we hope to excite kids about the wonders of science while teaching them in a way that is fun and engaging.”
In addition to in-classroom programming, each student will receive a free family pass to visit the MOST, enabling students to continue their science education journey more informally.
