OSWEGO, NY – The average temperature last month was a rather muggy 74.1 degrees.
While the humidity made things feel worse than it was, that’s only 3.3 degrees higher than average – and only good for 6th place on the list of all-time hot Julys dating back to 1844, according to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service.
The highest temperature was 90 degrees on the 5th and 12th.
The lowest was 54 degrees on the 2nd and 31st.
July had 2 days in the 90s and 16 days where it was 80 degrees or warmer, with streak of 5 and 4 days in a row.
“Four of those 80s were 89s, so we just missed having 6 90s last month,†Gregway pointed out. “The first 90 (on July 5) was the first time we hit 90 since Aug. 17, 2009.â€
The overnight lows lingered at 70 or above 11 times last month, with streaks of 3 and 4 nights in a row.
The 75 degrees overnight on July 9 was a near record, Gregway added.
Total precipitation last month was 5.24 inches. That is 2.21 inches above normal.
“It’s not that big of a deal,†Gregway said. “That’s only about the 9th wettest overall.â€
The wettest July is 9.35 inches (1992) and the driest is 0.13-inch (1853) with 0.54-inch (1960) not far behind.
The greatest precipitation in a 24-hour period was 1.56 inches on the 23rd. Right behind that was 1.27 inches on the 9th and 1.19 inches on the 24th / 25th.
“We basically got all our rain in those 3 big bursts,†Gregway said. “The first 8 days of the month were dry and hot.â€
July had measurable precipitation on 9 days, 1 day with a trace and 21 days (8 consecutively) with no precipitation.
Since the first of the year, precipitation stands at 25.42 inches. That’s 2.50 inches above average, Gregway said.
The area received 69 percent of the possible amount of sunshine last month, Gregway said, adding that is normal.
The number of cloudy days, 7, was 1 below normal.
The number of partly cloudy days, 15, was 3 above normal.
The number of clear days, 9, was 2 below normal.
There were 4 thunderstorm days in July. That’s 2 below average.
There was 1 foggy day and that is 1 above average.
The highest barometric pressure was 30.31 on the 2nd. The lowest was 29.72 on the 24th.
“We didn’t really have a lot of wind last month,†Gregway observed.
The strongest winds were northwesterly at about 19 mph on the 1st.
July 2009 was cooler, 3.6 degrees below average.
And, it was drier, 0.21-inch below normal.
