OSWEGO, NY – She said she was comfortable being in the second spot, but Kathleen Allen is grateful to all who made her the top vote getter in the 2010 Oswego school board election.
“I was comfortable in the second spot,†she laughed. “But I appreciate all the support from the voters tonight.
Allen earned one of the two open seats on the Oswego school board with an unofficial tally of 1,961.
Incumbent Jim Tschudy maintained his seat, finishing second with 1,889 votes.
The district’s 2010-11 spending plan was approved 2,031 to 1,735. And, voters OK’d the purchase of new buses, 2,129 to 1,504.
Jeff Carson finished third with an unofficial tally of 1,433. John Dunn received 1,142 votes and Sam Sugar 990 votes, according to the unofficial results.
“I want to congratulate Mrs. Allen on her election to the Oswego school board, and Jim on being re-elected,†said Sam Tripp, board president.
He also thanked the voters for supporting the district’s 2010-11 budget.
“We’ll take a week or two off and then get started on the next year’s budget. We’ll get an early start so it’s not so hectic next year,†he said, adding that he feels strongly that the 2011-12 budget will be just as tough as the one they just got done with.
Allen said she’d work for the best interest of the students and the school district as a whole.
“I know it’s going to be a tough three years with the economic climate locally and the state’s budget problems. I hope I can bring something to the table, forward thinking to help keep the district moving in the right direction,†she said.
She is pleased the budget passed.
“I was concerned about the potential cuts of non-mandated programs if the budget failed and we had to go to a contingency,†she said.
She said she wants to thank everyone who supported her.
“The best part is the budget was passed,†Tschudy said. “I was very pleased to see that. It means programs for the students won’t suffer.â€
“It was such a struggle to get a budget proposal in place this year,†he continued. “I was apprehensive about what might happen if we had to go back and make more cuts.â€
He credited Superintendent Bill Crist and the administrative team with doing its best to do what’s in the best interest of the students.
“I am grateful for the support the voters gave me,†he said. “And, I’m grateful to support people who want to help us move the district in the right direction.â€
As results began to come in, Tschudy was on top for the first districts, with Allen just a few votes back. He slipped to second after the fifth district reported.
Allen, Tschudy and Carson maintained the top three positions, respectively, the rest of the way.
The budget was approved in all but two of the districts.
Voters shot it down in Oswego’s Second Ward (117 – 120) and Scriba (258 – 316).
