OSWEGO, NY – Local observer for the National Weather Service, Bill Gregway, admits he was a little surprised at how warm April 2013 turned out.
“I thought it was a little chilly. But it was warmer,” he said. “The figures don’t lie.”
The average temperature last month was 46.6 degrees. That is 1.9 degrees above average.
The highest temperature was 75 degrees on the 28th and the lowest was 26 degrees on the 2nd.
There were no records set, Gregway added.
“We had 5 days where it was 70 or warmer (including the last 3 days in a row) and 5 days where it was 60 or warmer,” he said. “On the low side, it was in the 20s on 4 occasions and 32 or colder 7 times.”
Total precipitation for April was 3.47 inches. That is just 0.15-inch above average.
The greatest precipitation in a 24-hour period was 0.90-inch on the 10th.
Since the first of the year, precipitation stands at 10.54 inches, which is 2.76 inches below average.
April had 16 days of measurable precipitation, including a run of 7 straight.
There were 5 days of a trace and 9 days with no precipitation, including 2 stretches of 3 days in a row.
Total snowfall for April was 0.8-inch, which is 3.5 inches below average.
For the winter, snowfall, at the end of April, stood at 104.3 inches. That’s 46.5 inches below where it should be, Gregway said.
“This is the second year in a row that we’ve been down, way down, on snowfall,” he said.
The greatest snowfall in a 24-hour period for April was 0.8-inch on the 11th.
The area received snow pellets once and ice pellets once last month.
There were no thunderstorms, which is 1 below average and 1 foggy day, which is average.
April received 49 percent of the possible amount of sunshine. That is 2 percentages below average.
The number of cloudy days, 13, was 1 below average.
The number of partly cloud days, 13, was 5 above average.
The number of clear days, 4, was 4 below average.
The highest barometric pressure was 30.67 on the 21st and the lowest was 29.41 on the 19th.
“There was a lot of wind last month,” Gregway said. “We had 10 days where it was stronger than 20 mph with a few days in the 40s.”
The strongest winds were more than 40 mph out of the west on the 24th and on the 18th winds were south-southeasterly at more than 40 mph before shifting to the south and still around 30 mph, Gregway noted.
The warmest April is 52.0 degrees (1878). April 2010 isn’t far behind with 51.7 degrees and in 2008, April came in at 50.9 degrees.
The coldest is April 1874 – 37.2 degrees.
The warmest temperature in April is 90 degrees, recorded in 1990. The lowest, 11 degrees, came in 1923.
April 1859 was the wettest (7.03 inches) and 2011 saw 6.66 inches, Gregway said. The driest April, 0.61-inch, came in 1915.
The snowiest April is 17.9 inches in 1983. There are 6 Aprils that got off snow-free, Gregway added.
Last year, April was 1.1 degrees warmer than average.
The precipitation was down 1.18 inches and for the year the total was 10.55 (almost identical to this year), 2.75 inches below average.
There was 1 new record high set (86 degrees on the 16th).
Snowfall for the month was just 0.2-inch and for the winter it was a paltry 70.8 inches.
The last frost (start of growing season) last year was April 30. This year it was April 22.
