November 2011 Was ‘A Pretty Nice Month’

OSWEGO, NY – All in all, November 2011 was a pretty nice month.

“There wasn’t any snow to speak of,” according to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service. “It was sunny and mild with a few streaks of precipitation near the end.”

The average temperature last month was 47.6 degrees. That is 7 degrees warmer than average.

“I thought it was going to be a bit warmer. But a cold front blew through the area late Wednesday (Nov. 30) afternoon with some winds and rain and snow,” Gregway said. “We wound up third warmest since 1854.”

Last month’s highest temperature was 68 degrees on the 9th and the lowest was 24 degrees on the 22nd.

There were no records set.

The maximum temperature was 60 degrees or higher on 11 days while the minimum temperature was 32 degrees or below on 5 days. That bottomed out on the 22nd with the 24 degrees reading, Gregway noted.

There were 2 days when the lows were in the 20s.

Total precipitation for November was 3.22 inches. That is 1.25 inches below average.

“Actually,” Gregway pointed out, “that’s not bad considering about a week or so ago we were at only 0.66-inch. From the 23rd on, the last third of the month really, we got the bulk of our precipitation.”

The greatest precipitation in a 24-hour period was 1.54 inches on the 23rd.

Since the first of the year, the precipitation stands at 46.44 inches. That is 7.31 inches above normal, making this the second wetter than normal year in a row, Gregway added.

November received 2.9 inches of snow. That is 6.2 inches below where it should be.

The greatest snowfall in a 24-hour period was 2.5 inches on the 18th.

For the winter, the snow total is also 2.9 inches. That is 6.6 inches below average.

The area received 39 percent of the possible amount of sunshine. That’s 15 percentages above average.

The number of cloudy days, 19, was 3 below average.

The number of partly cloudy days, 7, was 1 above average.

The number of clear days, 4, was 2 above average.

There were 2 thunderstorms, including 1 ‘thundersnow.’ That is 2 above average.

November also had 1 foggy day, which is 1 more than normal.

There were 2 occasions of snow pellets.

However, there wasn’t any ice pellets or glaze last month.

There were 11 days of measurable precipitation – with a stretch of 4 in a row.

Six days had only a trace.

And, 13 days saw no precipitation – including 4 streaks of 3 days in a row.

The area had a hard frost on the 5th. There was a hard freeze on the 22nd.

Wind wasn’t much of a factor last month, Gregway noted. There were just 5 days where wind speeds were at or above 20 mph. The strongest winds were west-northwesterly around 30 mph on the 11th.

The highest barometric pressure was 30.50 on the 5th and the lowest was 29.47 on the 29th.

The average temperature for November is 40.6 degrees.

The warmest was 48.3 degrees in 2001 and the coolest was 30.0 degrees in 1933.

In second place is 48.2 degrees in 1931. That is followed by this year (47.6 degrees). Fourth place is 47.1 degrees in 1948/ Fifth place is 46.7 degrees in 1975 and sixth place is 46.0 degrees in 2009.

“So, 3 of the top 6 warmest Novembers all happened in the 2000s,” Gregway said. “That’s interesting.”

November’s highest temperature is 78 degrees set on the 8th in 1938 and 1950. The lowest is -1 degrees on the 30th in 1875.

November is usually a pretty wet month; the average precipitation is 4.47 inches.

The wettest on record is 9.03 inches in 1963. The driest is 0.45-inch in 1904.

The greatest precipitation ever recorded in a 24-hour period in November is 3.25 inches on the 30th in 1963.

Average snowfall for November is 9.1 inches.

The snowiest November is 1976 with 36.9 inches.

The least snow is zero in 1966. That is the only time November didn’t have any snowfall, Gregway pointed out.

He added that there seems to be a correlation between low snow totals in November and light (snow) winters.
