OSWEGO, NY – When Maggie Ellis accepted her Oswego High School diploma on the stage of the SUNY Oswego Campus Center it was the final step toward her acceptance of the Possibilities Scholarship.
Through a unique partnership between the Oswego City School District and SUNY Oswego, Ellis, a member of the “Class of 2010,†became the first Oswego High School student to officially receive a Possibilities Scholarship.
Recently, Ellis was recognized by the Oswego City School District Board of Education for this special honor.
Oswego Superintendent of Schools Bill Crist congratulated Ellis.
â€We are very excited for Maggie having just graduated in the ‘Class of 2010’ that she is receiving the Possibilities Scholarship. This is a very exciting partnership that has been developed between SUNY Oswego and the Oswego City School District,†he said.
Dr. Sashi Kanbur, representing SUNY Oswego and a man who played a key role in having the Oswego City School District involved in such a prestigious award, talked about the advantages that Ellis would gain from being selected for this scholarship.
He noted, “The Possibilities Scholarship was developed by the SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley and her office. It aims to provide talented students from socio-economically disadvantaged groups a completely free Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics education at SUNY Oswego. This includes tuition, room and board and books.â€
Continuing he said,†In addition, what makes the scholarship so unique is that it also provides two fully paid summer research experiences. The first is at SUNY Oswego during the sophomore summer working on a cutting edge research project with a SUNY Oswego STEM faculty member. The second, the Global Laboratory, is a fully paid summer research experience at a major research institution abroad working on such a diverse range of projects including wetlands ecology in the south of Brazil, Astrophysics in Taiwan, diabetes prevention in the Congo amongst others. This Global Laboratory is designed to train students to become the globally engaged scientists that are needed to keep the nation’s competitive edge.”
Kanbur noted, “ Maggie is the first from Oswego and I will be meeting with Oswego High School officials in the upcoming weeks to discuss even more of these opportunities for the future.â€
Oswego City School District Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Curriculum Cathy Chamberlain was excited over this new program.
“This scholarship affords many of our students with the possibility of changing their future. The ability to receive a four year college education is truly a gift,†she said. “This gift is one that can theoretically change the life path for a student. We are proud of Maggie Ellis and look forward to more of our students being able to try for this incredible award that can open many doors for them in the future.â€
For Ellis this is a tremendous opportunity and she is looking forward to the challenges that await her.
In the future the Possibilities Scholarship will open the doors for more Oswego High School graduates to receive an opportunity of a lifetime.
