Oswego Business Plans Teen Events

OSWEGO, NY – Recently, in an attempt to alleviate the problems caused by teens at the farmers’ market, city officials have endeavored to find alternative activities for teens on Thursday nights.

An Oswego business owner has stepped up and offered a possible solution.

At this week’s Planning and Development Committee meeting, Councilor Sue Sweet, on behalf of Bruce Bailey, owner of the Red Planet Skate Park, requested permission to have live bands on Thursdays from 5 to 9 p.m. from Aug. 14 to Oct. 9.

He would also request that the Noise Ordinance be waived during that time.

“We are trying to put something together for the kids on Thursday nights to remove them from the market area,” Sweet said. “It would run consecutively with the market hours.”

There would also be some skateboarding demonstrations and vendors.

If there are complaints, the city police, upon investigation, shall at their discretion, be allowed to order the owner to stop the live music, according to the proposed resolution.

“The council needs to understand there is a difference between Harborfest and three nights of bands in August and September and October with bands and you have a band across the river (behind Steamers) and you have outdoor speakers at the Northport. We just need to be careful with being too congenial with waiving the noise ordinance,” Councilor Connie Cosemento said. “I am hoping this will work, and it won’t be that loud.”
