OSWEGO, NY – There’s a new Great Pumpkin king in town – and it’s Andy Wolf.
The Little Valley resident’s entry was the last – and heaviest – pumpkin to be weighed today (Oct. 5) at the 22nd annual Great Pumpkin Festival in Oswego.
His entry topped the scales at 1,461.5 pounds. It wasn’t as big as last year’s champ (a 1,598.0-pounder grown by Quinn Wener of Saegertown, Pa.).
But, it was more than enough to outweigh its closest rivals – Carl Haist’s 1,264.0-pound entry and Jeff Alberts’ 1,229.0-pound entry.
The grand prize is $2,000.
“It’s a lot of practice; I’ve been doing this for almost 15 years now. It’s a lot of hard work,” he told Oswego County Today. “It takes lots of manure, lots of water and yes, a little bit of luck. That plays a big part. I had one last year that was 1,640 pounds on Aug. 26 and it was still growing pretty good. And it split. You win some, you loose some.”
Also being weighed were several squash, watermelon and tomatoes.
The festival continues on Sunday in East Park, Oswego.
The Do Good Swing Band will be performing its authentic swing band style from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Fritz’s Polka Band will begin at 2 p.m. and wraps up the festival at 5 p.m.
In addition to the live entertainment, there will be bouncy houses, games and face painting for the kids, rides and a corn maze.
Food and handmade crafts will also be at the festival.
