OSWEGO – An overnight fire in the City of Oswego temporarily displaced the residents of 2 apartments on the west side. The Oswego Fire Department was dispatched at 2:44am to a reported fire at 173 West Seneca Street – a mixed property with 2 apartments connected to a large vacant commercial space. Oswego Firefighters arrived minutes later to find smoke and flames coming from the front of the large structure.
Oswego Firefighters quickly deployed 2 handlines to knock down the bulk of the flames, while simultaneously searching the apartments and commercial space for trapped victims. Firefighters worked for the next 2 hours overhauling hot spots and extinguishing spot fires in walls and void spaces. One apartment was occupied at the time of the fire – all occupants were able to exit the structure safely on their own accord and were evaluated at the scene for smoke inhalation. Both apartments sustained smoke damage. Fire damage was contained to the commercial space and exterior wall. All units were back in service by 5am. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Oswego Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Oswego Police Department, Fulton Fire Department, Novelis Fire Department, Oswego County Fire Coordinator’s Office, Menter Ambulance, and National Grid.
City of Oswego Fire Chief Paul Conzone applauded the efforts of the Firefighters on the scene, stating “Our team did a great job getting quick water on this fire, ultimately saving the large mixed occupancy structure from further damage. Special thanks to our mutual aid partners that assisted us on the scene.”
