OSWEGO, NY – The campus of Oswego Hospital will go smoke-free on Nov. 20, and its employees, patients and their visitors will not be allowed to use tobacco products on the hospital campus after this date.
“This is a very important health initiative for our hospital campus that I strongly support,†said Oswego Health President and CEO Ann C. Gilpin. “The use of cigarettes and other tobacco products can cause cancer and other serious health issues. As a healthcare organization, it is our responsibility to support healthy lifestyles.â€ÂÂ
To prepare for the campus going smoke-free, educational sessions on how to quit smoking have been offered to both Oswego Health employees and the general public.
“As a part of this initiative we wanted to help our employees quit smoking and improve their health,†said Terri Hammill, Oswego Hospital R.N. nursing supervisor, who is spearheading the hospital program. “We have provided lots of useful information and health aides to help them quit.â€ÂÂ
Oswego Health has opened several of its educational programs to the public.
Patients who smoke that are admitted to the hospital after Nov. 20 will be offered nicotine replacement therapies, such as patches, gum, and lozenges, with physician approval.
They will also be offered free smoking cessation counseling while in the hospital.
Visitors and the general public can learn more about how they can quit smoking by calling the New York Quit Line at 1-866 NY QUITS (1-866-697-8487).
This is a free service that can offer counseling and nicotine replacement therapies.
The Oswego Health care system includes the Oswego Hospital, The Manor at Seneca Hill skilled nursing facility, Springside at Seneca Hill retirement living community and services across Oswego County.
