Oswego Mayor Calls For A Public Hearing Regarding Restore New York Grant.

By Jose Hernadez

Oswego, NY – Mayor Rober Corradino has called for a public hearing on November 25, 2024, regarding an application for a $1 million grant from Restore New York. The funding is intended to support the rehabilitation of the historic Oswego Freight House, one of the oldest railroad buildings in New York State, which is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

At the recent city meeting, it was announced that the City-County Youth Bureau has requested the cancellation of the Santa Express Jingle Mingle, scheduled for December 14, 2024. Mayor Corradino spoke on their behalf, citing that the bureau is experiencing staffing shortages that prevent them from organizing the event this year.

Meanwhile, the Tenth Annual Trinity Turkey Trot 5K, set for Sunday, November 17, 2024, received approval from the mayor. The event aims to raise funds for the music department at Trinity Catholic School.

Oswego Fire Chief Paul Conzone also addressed the council, seeking approval for several budgetary transfers totaling $60,952. Conzone noted that these funds would be reallocated to prioritize purchasing new fire hoses and essential equipment for the firehouse.

In a bid to enhance city safety measures, Police Chief Phillip Cady has requested authorization to accept a grant of $23,900 for new cameras to supplement an earlier allocation of approximately $103,000, which is designated for replacing aging surveillance systems throughout the city.

Cady further elaborated on the upcoming Shop of the Hero event, an annual initiative in collaboration with Walmart, and asked for an additional $500 to purchase gift cards for the program. Additionally, he proposed that the city chamberlain accept a grant of $186,300 from the Community Resiliency Economic Sustainability and Technology program aimed at acquiring car cameras and license plate reading systems through Axon Technologies. This grant would cover a five-year contract for equipment linked to 13 marked patrol cars, bolstering the city’s law enforcement capabilities.
