SCHROON LAKE – The Schroon Lake Central School Board of Education Thursday, April 14, hired Oswego Middle School Principal Bonnie Finnerty as the district’s new superintendent.
Finnerty took the oath of office and signed a five-year contract, with a starting salary of $108,000, during the April 14 board meeting, according to School Board President John Armstrong.
She was in town with her family to attend the school’s Academic Fair from 6 to 8 p.m. prior to the board meeting.
Finnerty and Ticonderoga High School Principal Michael Graney were the final two candidates up for the job.
“Both candidates were absolutely fabulous,” Armstrong said. “It was a very hard choice.”
Although both candidates would have made excellent superintendents, Armstrong said it was the trip to Oswego, made by School Board members, that made the difference.
“It was just the little bitty details on the site visit,” Armstrong said without going into specifics.
The decision was unanimous, Armstrong said.
Finnerty’s appointment, which officially begins on July 1, ends a year-long search for a permanent superintendent at the Schroon Lake Central School.
Michael Bonnewell, left the position on June 30, 2010, after 10 years to take the superintendent’s job at the Albion Central School District in Orleans County.
Gerald Blair, of Lake Placid, has been serving as the interim superintendent since July 1, 2010, and will end his work in Schroon Lake on June 30.
Blair has been superintendent in places such as the Lake Placid Central School District, Chazy Central Rural School, and the Northern Adirondack Central School in Ellenburg Depot.
He said he hopes to find another interim school superintendent position when Finnerty takes over in Schroon Lake.
