OSWEGO – Officials at Oswego City School District were informed late Monday by the Oswego County Health Department that another OCSD student, who attends an out-of-district educational program, has tested positive for COVID-19.

The student, who will not be identified due to confidentiality and privacy, last attended the out-of-district program on Monday, Sept. 28 and tested positive on Oct. 5.

Given the fact the student does not attend any in-district educational programs, schools have been deemed safe by health authorities and in-person instruction at OCSD is continuing as scheduled at this time.

OCSD Superintendent Dr. Mathis Calvin III addressed a Tuesday morning letter to parents, guardians and community members with the latest update.

“To secure the health and safety of our students and staff, the Oswego County Health Department will continue to fully investigate this concern,” Calvin said. “Close contacts identified through contract tracing (within six feet for longer than 10 minutes) will be notified and placed in quarantine if appropriate.”

Out of an abundance of caution, officials are asking everyone to keep an eye out for common COVID-19 signs and symptoms, including fever equal to or greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit, cough, loss of taste or smell, fatigue/feeling tired, sore throat, shortness of breath or trouble breathing, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, body aches, headache, nasal congestion and runny nose.

“The health and safety of our students and staff is always our number one priority,” Calvin said, noting the district is taking every precaution and working extensively with health authorities when necessary.

Officials will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates to the community whenever possible, the superintendent added.

Those with any questions or concerns are encouraged to reach out to their child’s school principal or the district’s COVID-19 hotline at 315-341-2050.

Tuesday’s letter can be found along with previous and future communications in the Superintendent’s News section on the district homepage, Oswego.org.
