Police, School District Announce Two Arrests

OSWEGO, NY – City police and school district officials today (Oct. 20) announced the arrests of two suspects in the recent bomb scares at Oswego schools.

One suspect is a student; the other is a district staff member.

Regarding the Oct. 7 bomb threat at Oswego Middle School, the suspect is a 15-year-old girl. Her name isn’t being released as she is a minor.

The suspect in the Oct. 15 bomb threat at OMS is 23-year-old Aleicia M. Stancliffe. She was identified by Superintendent William Crist as a teacher’s aide at OMS, working as a sign language interrupter for special needs students.

The police department has assisted the school district in its handling of a series of recent bomb threats which caused the evacuation of students.

Specifically:

October 7, 13 and 15 at Oswego Middle School

And, October 13, at Oswego High School.

Members of the police department, working in conjunction with the school district, have identified two suspects in two of the recent bomb threats occurring at Oswego Middle School.

The female student, being a juvenile, will be dealt with in Family Court for a crime which, if committed by an adult would amount to “Falsely Reporting an Incident in the First Degree” (a Class D Felony), according to Chief Michael Dehm.

Earlier this morning, after having been identified as a suspect through the investigative efforts of the police department with the cooperation of the school district, Stancliffe was arrested.

She was subsequently arraigned in Oswego City Court before the Honorable Judge James Metcalf on one count of “Falsely Reporting an Incident in the First Degree” (a Class D Felony).

Upon arraignment, Stancliffe was given pre-trial release with a return court date of November 19.

“The investigation into the pending incidents will be on-going. We have some people of interest who our investigators are locating and interviewing, and we will maintain our cooperative effort with the Oswego City School District,” Chief Dehm said. “We would like to take this opportunity to thank some of the outside agencies who have assisted us in our initial response to these incidents in addition to the Oswego City School District, such as: the Oswego County Sheriff’s Department, New York State University Police at Oswego, the United States Border Patrol, the Oswego Fire Department and the Traffic Section of the Oswego Police Department. Each of these agencies provided needed manpower to assist in the Oswego City School District’s handling of one or more of the recent bomb threats.”

  2. First, thanks for your note.

    Advertising pays the bills for this free website. It takes a ton of money to meet payroll and pay the office bills and keep the server online. Local advertising only goes so far, and it is going less far than usual in this recession.

    So we’ve increased the frequency of popunders to one every six hours. We’re looking at dialing that back to once every 12 hours which, for most folks, will be once a day.

    We’re also acting to block the one popunder seen most frequently, one which asks you to click OK before the ad goes away. That’s pretty abusive. We can only block them after they arrive, as we don’t control the network.

    The bottom line is that there’s a price for free news and we have to do what we can to pay the bills in other ways.

  3. I understand about having to get some revenue to keep things working. I like the page and keeps me in touch with the area now that I am away. Have you ever thought of making it easier to comment/read comments of others on the page. Maybe a side bar that shows what storie people comment on (which I dont think happens that often) People love to debate… Just my 2 cents

  4. It’s a good thought. Yes, we have discussed it. Widgets like those that show most popular stories or most commented stories put an extra load on our server. And we’ve been through a couple of server crashes in recent weeks, so we’re being careful right now about what we add. (Behind the scenes, we’re actually taking some things away — nothing noticeable — to try to improve server response.)

    But I’d say it’s in our plans.
