OSWEGO, NY – The general public, and business community, will have a chance tonight to weigh in on the possible amendment to the Code of the City of Oswego, Chapter 80, Zoning, Section 280-65 Illuminated and Flashing Signs.
At its last meeting, the Planning and Development Committee approved a request by Tony Leotta, city engineer, to have a public hearing for the proposed amendments.
The hearing will get under way at 7:10 p.m. in the Council Chamber.
Changes would include replacing “flashing” with “Digital and Electronic” in the title; adding revolving signs to the list of those prohibited (“unless necessary for public safety or traffic control”) and adding digital and/or electronic operated signs shall be allowed only as a steady state light display.
It also states that: signs may be illuminated by a steady light, provided that such lighting will not be directed or create glare onto other properties or be a hazard to traffic.
Third Ward Councilor Cathy Santos said the council needs to hear what the residents and businesses think.
“If you’re trying to preserve the historic nature of downtown, flashing lights is a major contradiction to that,” she pointed out.
The full council will consider the possible change during its meeting, which gets under way at 7:30 p.m.
Among the other resolutions for Monday’s meeting are: four requests for use of public space, a request from a group of recreational boaters for use of a portion of the Oswego River Walk East for placement of a temporary restroom during Harborfest 2011, renaming Helen Street to East 10 ½ Street, to make East 10 ½ Street continuous, renewing the lease agreement with the Ontario Center for the Performing Arts, and permitting a local businessman to erect a garage over an existing storm sewer on property located at 286 E. Second St.
