OSWEGO – The small park at the entrance to the city at East First and Utica street will be getting some sprucing up, thanks to the Oswego Sunrise Rotary Club.
At its meeting Monday night, the Physical Services Committee gave a favorable recommendation to a request from the club for use of public space at Leotta Park in order to construct a pavilion and place four picnic tables.
They will also do landscaping in the area.
The club meetings are held across the street at the Oswego Tea Company.
The pavilion would be 18 by 12 feet and cost an estimated $12,000. It would be paid by the Rotarians.
Construction will be done by volunteer workers.
The club requests the city provide the pad and an electrical connection.
They wish to name it the Oswego Sunrise Rotary Pavilion.
“They’re proposing to make that small park look very nice when you’re coming into the city,” Councilor Robert Wilmott said.

The Community Development Office received a request from Kingsford Park Elementary School regarding the Fifth Annual Triathlon to be held on June 9.
The event is requesting barricades, traffic cones and road closures from noon to 4 p.m. the day of the event at – Mark Fitzgibbons Drive between the corner of Murray Street and the main entrance of the middle school.
Thomas Kells, Commissioner of the Department of Public Works and Parks and Recreation, received a request form Andrea Schrader to place a memorial bench at the corner of West Fifth and Niagara streets near Kingsford Park Elementary School in honor of her grandmother Constance “Nana” Schrader.
She’d also like a plaque listing her years of service as a crossing guard. According to Schrader, her grandmother was “the original self-appointed crossing guard before the position was officially created and continued on to be the long-time supervisor for the crossing guards.”
Kells also received a request from Bernadette Pryor, on behalf of Pryor’s Taeknwando America and the Oswego Bookmobile, to hold a break-a-thon fundraiser in public space at Breitbeck Park on May 19.
On March 12, the Common Council approved a request from Stephanie Lamb, Associate Alumni Director at SUNY Oswego, for use of Breitbeck Park on June 9 in order to host an alumni event.
However, the name of the requestor needs to be changed to the Oswego Alumni Association in order for them to obtain the required Certificate of Liability Insurance.
Lamb requested rescinding Resolution No. 80, dated March 12, 2018, and forwarding a new resolution to council which changes the requester to the Oswego Alumni Association.
All the requests were sent to the full council for consideration.
