Students Prepare To Head Back To School

OSWEGO, NY – It seems like just yesterday was the last day of school. However, classes are ready to begin again.

“We’re very, very excited about that. Most of the T’s and I’s have been dotted and crossed,” said Oswego Superintendent Bill Crist. “We are looking forward to welcoming students back Wednesday.”

On Tuesday the teachers and staff will report back to school, he added.

“We’re looking forward to continuing the work of putting the common core together, the new standards and the new evaluation system for both teachers and administrators will be a big part of what we will be starting the school year with as well as the student learning objectives the teachers and instructional staff will be working on opening day,” Crist said.

The incoming class of freshmen at OHS is “a bit lighter” than last year, according to principal Brian Hartwell.

He recently greeted the bulk of the class of 2016 during a freshmen orientation open house at the school.

The event allowed the new students and their parents to familiarize themselves with the high school.

Hartwell encouraged each student to visit the gym, meet their counselors and pick up their schedules and get their community service paperwork.

The new requirement means each student must accumulate at least 24 hours of community service, the principal explained.

For those who go above and beyond, they will be honored at graduation time, he added.

They also had their ID photos taken.

After a trip to the gym, many students walked their schedule to ensure they knew where their classrooms were located. And they made sure they had the right combination for their lockers.

Nearly two dozen OHS Honor Society students were on hand to assist and guide the underclassmen.

Shawn Clary said he really wasn’t too nervous.

“I’m looking forward to the new school year,” he said. “It’s going to be great going to the high school.”

Lydia Tryon said she was nervous.

“Yes, she is!” her mother added.

“It will probably be OK,” Lydia said. “It’ll just take some time getting used to everything.”
