OSWEGO, NY- New York Times best-seller author Dr. Lois Frankel made SUNY Oswego a stop recently on her speaking tour.
Dr. Frankel worked in human resources for 10 years and has been a career coach for more than 20 years.
She graduated from SUNY Oswego, where she says her career in human resources started as a resident advisor.
She later received her doctorate in psychology from the University of Southern California.
Her speech, named after her book, “Why Nice Girls Don’t Get The Corner Office,” focused on women in the workplace and some of the mistakes and behaviors that hold some women back from the success they might desire.
According to Dr. Frankel her point is simple: “What are the childhood messages? How do we over rely on them, and what behaviors do you need to add to compliment them? That’s the message.”
The speech was very engaging, requiring audience participation.
Audience members were allowed to ask questions at any time, and answering questions earned prizes for some people.
Her speech was streamed live over the school’s website, and audience members, via the web, were able to ask for career advice and tips as well.
Dr. Frankel’s wit and speech delivery made for an informative and entertaining experience.
Aside from her busy touring schedule, Dr. Frankel has started a variety of charitable organizations including MOSTE and Bloom Again.
MOSTE which has been operating for more than 20 years stands for Motivating Our Students Through Experience, and the program provides mentors and scholarships to at-risk inner city middle school girls.
Bloom Again is a program that helps women living at the poverty level pay for any type of medical emergency.
Dr. Frankel, a breast cancer survivor, said, “I realized I was really lucky because I had time to heal. I had the money to buy the best doctors, and I said when I get through this I am going to help other women who aren’t as lucky.”
As for what she hopes to accomplish, she said, “My goal is to empower as many people as I possibly can for them to achieve their goals. They don’t have to be grand goals, they just have to be that you doing what you want in life, and if you’re not, then it’s not worth it.”
Dr. Frankel was invited as a guest speaker as part of the Ernst & Young Lecture Series.
After the speech concluded Dr. Frankel visited classes in the Woman’s Studies program on campus.
