Tri-Oswego Weekend Kicks Off Saturday

By Nicholas Cafalone, Contributing Writer
OSWEGO, NY – What better way to start off the official first week of Summer than a day full of swimming, biking and running.

Tri-Oswego plans to do just that.

Tri-Oswego will be hosting its first triathlon in the city of Oswego on Sunday.  Organizers believe that the beauty of Lake Ontario and Oswego County’s hills will make for the perfect race environment.

“I’ve been doing these for a long time, it’s nice to have one here,” said Oswego native and race director Ron Nelson. “It’s definitely exciting having a USA Triathlon sanctioned event right in the city of Oswego.”

USA Triathlon is the sanctioning authority for more than 3,000 different races worldwide, ranging from grassroots to high profile events.  They work to organize camps, clinic, educational opportunities and races.  USA Triathlon has 130,000 members consisting of athletes, coaches, officials and fans.

Tri-Oswego has registered more than 250 participants from across the United States and Canada.  “I believe there are seven states represented and a couple provinces out of Canada,” said Nelson.

Participants of the event will be are able to choose if they want to do the sprint or intermediate courses.  The sprint course consists of an 800 meter swim in Oswego Harbor, a 13-mile bike course and a 5K run.  The intermediate distance event will consist of a 1,000 meter swim, 24.9-mile bike course and a 10K run.

Saturday, Tri-Oswego will host two speakers at Breitbeck Park while distributing race packets for participants.

Karen Allen-Turner and Eric Prager co-authored “Engineered Triathletes” and will give two separate speeches at 1:15 and 2:15.  The speeches will be about race day tips and transition tips for participants.
